We created this page with two gentle purposes in mind. First, to help ensure this name is never used to support puppy mills. And second, to quietly encourage something we believe in deeply: adopting from shelters and rescues.
We understand how much love and hope people pour into choosing a new four-legged family member. It’s completely natural to dream of a specific breed or to picture exactly what your future companion might look like. Those feelings come from a good place — a place of love. At the same time, we’ve seen again and again how shelter pets often become the most loyal, affectionate, and grateful companions imaginable. Their outside appearance rarely tells the full story of the kindness and devotion they bring into our homes.If only we could choose our human family members as wisely as we can choose our pets, right?
Please don’t overlook the older dogs and cats waiting in shelters — especially the five- and six-year-olds. My own sweet girl, Gizmo (featured on SaveShelterAnimals.com), was around five or six when I fostered her. She has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
And while it’s less common, shelters do sometimes have puppies available for adoption too.
So if you’re thinking about opening your heart and home to a dog, we hope you’ll consider visiting your local shelter first. Adopt… don’t shop.
